January 2012

These statistics are all for short stories, poems, or contest entries. Book reviews are not included.

  1. Sales in January: 0
  2. Rejections in January: 0
  3. Submissions sent out in January: 0
  4. Total stories/poems/contests pending responses: 1

Almost a year ago, I sent a first line submission to 50 to 1 which either got lost somewhere in email or I missed the rejection. They’re pretty fast so I’m going to mark it off my pending responses. It’s a new year so I’ll start with a clean slate.

I’m thinking the way to go is the monthly Write 1 Sub 1 to encourage more submissions this year.

ROW80 Round 3 Final Check-in

Posted in Event, Writing at 9:57 pm by Amber

Fireworks

My revised goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days was to write another 5,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript.

Here is how I did:

Goal: 5,000 Words
Words Written: 5027
Progress: Made it!

I was behind until this week when I kicked it into gear.

Are you going to join me for Round 4? I’m going to work on some short stories and getting my first three pages of this novel back to an editor.

ROW80 Sunday Check-in for 9/18/11

Posted in Event, Writing at 7:47 pm by Amber

Before I get to the goals I wanted to talk about procrastination. I’m really into the habit of not writing more than writing. The other week I put some thought into my procrastination habit. Depending on the circumstances, I’m a rebellious or perfectionist procrastinator.

It wasn’t until recently I picked up on my rebelliousness. For example, I should weed the backyard so we have more grass than weeds but I’m an adult with my own house – I’ll get to it when I get to it.

The perfectionism thing is something I’ve been slowly letting go of the past few years. I started with giving myself permission to write lousy first drafts. Sound familiar to anyone?

My goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to write another 10,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. There are 4 days left in the challenge. That averages to 1622 words a day in order to make my goal.

Goal: 10,000 Words
Words Written: 3510 (nothing new since Tuesday)
Progress: Extremely Behind But Can Still Catch Up

But I’ve decided to revise the goal. Another way of letting go of perfection, right? I know I can write those words all in a day or two if I do nothing else. And the point of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to have a life while you reach your writing goals.

So here is my revised goal:

Goal: 5,000 Words
Words Written: 3510
Progress: Behind But Can Still Catch Up

Happy Sunday!

My goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to write another 10,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. That averaged to 125 words a day and now I have to write about 650 a day in order to make my goal. There are 11 days left in the challenge.

Goal: 10,000 Words
Words Written: 2821 (782 since 8/28/11)
Progress: Extremely Behind But Can Still Catch Up

I didn’t post any check-ins this past week because I was embarrassed of my 9 words. I’m sure visitors are tired of hearing the same thing twice a week about how little I was able to write. And how stubborn I am about not changing my goal.

One of the mini-workshops I took last month involved using engaging words to make your story come alive. The editor offered to look at the first three pages of our manuscripts. I sent them on and was surprised to have a critique within 24 hours. You know what was encouraging? They really need work but she didn’t tell me it was complete crap. In fact, she offered to look at them again after I worked on them some more which was nice.

  4. Total stories/poems/contests pending responses: 1

Next month I’ll take that pending response off… it’s for something I submitted over a year ago. A slush reader replied it was still under consideration a few months ago – I haven’t heard anything since then and when I went to the site today nothing new has been published for a few months.

Happy Sunday

My goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to write another 10,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. That averaged to 125 words a day and now I have to write more since I’m behind. No new words this week.

Goal: 10,000 Words
Words Written: 2039
Progress: Behind But Can Still Catch Up

I kept busy this week working on Savvy Authors Summer Symposium miniworkshops. They pack a lot of assignments into a four day window. It’s all good and I did limit myself so I wouldn’t be overstretched. Oh, and in case you’re wondering… I have some bachelorette time coming up in about 2 weeks. Words will flow!

ROW Midweek Check-in 8/24/11

Happy Thursday! I didn’t get my check-in ready in time to post it yesterday though there isn’t really anything new to report.

My goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to write another 10,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. That averaged to 125 words a day and now I have to write more since I’m behind. No new words since Saturday.

Goal: 10,000 Words
Words Written: 2039
Progress: Behind But Can Still Catch Up

What’s been keeping me busy this week? A critique class at Savvy Authors and now their Summer Symposium which is full of mini-workshops. I have limited myself to only a few. Oh, and this guy…

He’s been in his e-collar for almost a month now. On Monday the Resident Corgi had a second keratotomy. I hope this one works.

Happy Sunday!

My goal for Round 3 of A Round of Words in 80 Days is to write another 10,000 words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. That averaged to 125 words a day and now I have to write more since I’m behind. I had a big jump in words this week.

Goal: 10,000 Words
Words Written: 2039 (that’s 743 new words since last Sunday!)
Progress: Behind But Can Still Catch Up

How did I do it? During the beginning of the week, I use my mornings to watch TrueBlood and any cooking shows I recorded from the weekend. After getting those out of the way that gave me some 20 – 30 minute chunks in the morning to just write. So that’s what I did.

July 2011

Posted in Status Report, Writing at 10:24 pm by Amber

Goodness! I just realized I never posted my stats for July. They won’t be a surprise to anyone but I know if I wanted a few more weeks to post then I’d feel weird.

These statistics are all for short stories, poems, or contest entries. Book reviews are not included.

  1. Sales in July: 0
  2. Rejections in July: 0
  3. Submissions sent out in July: 0
  4. Total stories/poems/contests pending responses: 1

I signed up to do a story a week challenge and that’s not been going well. I’m sorely behind in my ROW80 goal to write another 10k words on my unfinished fantasy manuscript. On the plus side, I’m feeling up my writing notebook with snippets of ideas. The short stories are part of the next ROW80 goals for me.
