Once someone knows of my wonderful ability to get lost it can become a defining characteristic.<\/p>\n
During my college years I was a bridesmaid in\u00c2\u00a0a wedding held in a\u00c2\u00a0city\u00c2\u00a0slightly South East of Columbus.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a 30 mile drive\u00c2\u00a0and I attempted to\u00c2\u00a0go by\u00c2\u00a0myself to the rehearsal.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, I had made it to the bridal shower without help from anyone.\u00c2\u00a0 (But I could be mistaken – it’s entirely possible the bride picked me up to make sure I’d be there!)\u00c2\u00a0 In high school and college I didn’t own a car.\u00c2\u00a0 I only drove the family station wagon in the city.\u00c2\u00a0 On this\u00c2\u00a0particular trip the freeway signs confused me.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Lost and anxious, I pulled over and used a pay phone to tell them I was late.\u00c2\u00a0 (This was before cell phones were everywhere and the best quality movie format you could find was a laser disc.)\u00c2\u00a0 The pay phone was located 55 miles North West of the rehearsal.\u00c2\u00a0 I had gone 23 miles in the opposite direction of where I needed to be!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0In my absence I was nicknamed “Miss Plain City 1992” because that was where I called from.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
I write “lost” too.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s difficult for me to use outlines or have a real sense of structure when I tackle a short story.\u00c2\u00a0 When lost while driving I get anxious.\u00c2\u00a0 I worry about how late I’ll be, how long it will take me to get righted, and\u00c2\u00a0how much fun\u00c2\u00a0I may be missing.\u00c2\u00a0 When writing while lost it is an entirely different experience.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0My words meander\u00c2\u00a0across the pages.\u00c2\u00a0 I’m confident I’ll get to where I need to go.\u00c2\u00a0 There is no time limit on when I have to get there.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s so much easier to enjoy the ride.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
