{"id":721,"date":"2008-12-26T22:53:02","date_gmt":"2008-12-27T03:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=721"},"modified":"2008-12-26T22:53:02","modified_gmt":"2008-12-27T03:53:02","slug":"sweetsmoke-by-david-fuller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=721","title":{"rendered":"Sweetsmoke by David Fuller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-723 aligncenter\" title=\"sweetsmoke\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/sweetsmoke.jpg\" alt=\"sweetsmoke\" width=\"95\" height=\"143\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caribousmom.com\/2008\/08\/20\/sweetsmoke-book-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caribousmom<\/a> is where I first read anything about this book.\u00c2\u00a0 It was in the newly released section of the library recently and recognizing the name as one I wanted to read, it came home with me that day.<\/p>\n<p>Set in 1862 during the Civil War, the reader is introduced to Cassius, a carpenter and slave on the Sweetsmoke plantation.\u00c2\u00a0 Cassius is a favorite of Howard Hoke, the landowner, and is allowed some liberties the other slaves do not.\u00c2\u00a0 Emoline, a former Sweetsmoke slave who was given her freedom by Hoke, is found murdered in her home.\u00c2\u00a0 She was a mother figure to Cassius who taught him how to read and write though no one knows he is literate.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Cassius uses his liberties and smarts to find out the identity of the murderer.<\/p>\n<p>The book is a well done piece of historical fiction.\u00c2\u00a0 Interactions of the characters based on their station and during a time when resources are scarce ring true.\u00c2\u00a0 Customs are explained without reading like a textbook.<\/p>\n<p>It asks some philosophical questions about loyalty and what constitutes freedom.\u00c2\u00a0 How loyal should a slave be to his or her owner?\u00c2\u00a0 Can a slave be loyal to friends and loved ones even if it comes at a cost?\u00c2\u00a0 How does one earn loyalty from another?\u00c2\u00a0 Is freedom something granted by someone in a position of power?\u00c2\u00a0 Or is freedom experienced through literacy and independence?\u00c2\u00a0 These questions are reminiscent of the debate between human law and natural law which I found fascinating in college.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline of events was a bit confusing or rushed near the end of the novel when Howard Hoke takes ill but that&#8217;s a minor complaint.\u00c2\u00a0 For a debut novel this is a solid effort.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caribousmom is where I first read anything about this book.\u00c2\u00a0 It was in the newly released section of the library recently and recognizing the name as one I wanted to read, it came home with me that day.
