{"id":415,"date":"2008-09-25T15:51:45","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T19:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=415"},"modified":"2008-09-25T15:51:45","modified_gmt":"2008-09-25T19:51:45","slug":"the-magazine-of-fantasy-and-science-fiction-octnov-2008-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=415","title":{"rendered":"The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction &#8211; Oct\/Nov 2008 Issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gordon Van Gelder, Publisher\/Editor, of the magazine offered over a dozen copies of the\u00c2\u00a0October\/November 2008 issue\u00c2\u00a0to bloggers.\u00c2\u00a0 I was one of the lucky ones.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard of the magazine for years and read some of the contents but never actually read an entire issue until now.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those magazines meant to be read when large chunks of reading time is available.\u00c2\u00a0 There are certainly some short stories and poems available but the work is best enjoyed after the experience has settled.\u00c2\u00a0 The editors do a nice job of accepting items of various length and putting it all together in a way that isn&#8217;t exhausting to the reader.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, the issue begins with Albert E. Cowdrey&#8217;s short story &#8220;Inside Story&#8221; which is followed by Charles de Lint&#8217;s book reviews.\u00c2\u00a0 Some readers would have problems shifting from Cowdrey&#8217;s post-Katrina New Orleans to Tim Sullivan&#8217;s asteroid geological trip turned disaster tale if they were placed together.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to like about this particular issue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Inside Story&#8221; by Albert E. Cowdrey &#8211; Post-Katrina New Orleans is in need of all the residents it can keep.\u00c2\u00a0 For some reason, residents of the FEMA trailers keep disappearing.\u00c2\u00a0 Detectives Fournet and Tobin are going to look into the matter.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Days of Wonder&#8221; by Geoff Ryman &#8211; The featured society in this story migrates according to the seasons and amount of food available.\u00c2\u00a0 As often happens, a clash between a dreamer and the others brings about change.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Visionaries&#8221; by Robert Reed &#8211; How is it that a poorly written\u00c2\u00a0novella can\u00c2\u00a0garner the\u00c2\u00a0main character\u00c2\u00a0professional pay rates for the rest of his\u00c2\u00a0writing life?\u00c2\u00a0 What makes\u00c2\u00a0the main character\u00c2\u00a0so special?\u00c2\u00a0 Could a conspiracy be underway?<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Private Eye&#8221; by Terry Bisson &#8211; This\u00c2\u00a0tale has a\u00c2\u00a0noir feel\u00c2\u00a0featuring a private eye and an internet worker bee.\u00c2\u00a0 While their professions could be far off in the future, the interplay between these New Yorkers is unquestionably present day.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;December 22, 2012&#8221; by Sophie M.
