{"id":409,"date":"2008-09-28T13:08:42","date_gmt":"2008-09-28T17:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=409"},"modified":"2008-09-28T10:09:22","modified_gmt":"2008-09-28T14:09:22","slug":"faceless-killers-by-henning-mankell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=409","title":{"rendered":"Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/faceless-killers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-410\" style=\"FLOAT: left\" title=\"faceless-killers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/faceless-killers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><em>Faceless Killers <\/em>introduces the Swedish detective, Kurt Wallander, to US readers.\u00c2\u00a0 (There are approximately a dozen books featuring Wallander but not all have been translated into English.)\u00c2\u00a0 One cold evening, an elderly farm couple is attacked.\u00c2\u00a0 The husband is killed and the wife is found\u00c2\u00a0barely alive.\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;s able to offer clues to solve the crime before she passes away from her injuries.\u00c2\u00a0 The clues point to non-Swedish suspects which can turn the case into a political situation if not handled with tact.\u00c2\u00a0 While trying to thoroughly follow the leads Wallander receives threatening phone calls, discovers a source leak in the department\u00c2\u00a0and more blood is shed.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kurt Wallander is a middle-aged man alienated from his daughter,\u00c2\u00a0recently divorced\u00c2\u00a0from his wife, distant from his sister and too preoccupied with work to deal with his aging father.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Each of the relatives make an appearance and not always at convenient times.\u00c2\u00a0 Add an attractive prosecutor to the mix and Wallander&#8217;s work is no longer the refuge it once was.<\/p>\n<p>Mankell packs a lot into this novel.\u00c2\u00a0 In less adept hands this could be a mess.\u00c2\u00a0 The police procedural information and work environment are easy to follow.\u00c2\u00a0 Mankell provides enough details to keep the reader informed and engaged without giving a course or lecture on the topic.\u00c2\u00a0 The writing is also superb.\u00c2\u00a0 When Wallander is out on surveillance your own joints ache as though you were the one asked to move in the freezing cold weather.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wallander is not a super detective;
