August’s host is Life In The Thumb<\/a>.<\/p>\n Two books came into my home this week. The first was a gift from my husband. He prefaced it with the comment “I\u00c2\u00a0keep hearing about books at work you’d love to read\u00c2\u00a0but you don’t read anything I buy you anymore. I heard so much about this one I had to get it for you.” It’s\u00c2\u00a0The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance<\/em>by Edmund du Waal. I’ll let the book speak for itself:<\/p>\n Edmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. Having spent thirty years making beautiful pots\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwhich are then sold, collected, and handed on\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhe has a particular sense of the secret lives of objects. When he inherited a collection of 264 tiny Japanese wood and ivory carvings, called netsuke, he wanted to know who had touched and held them, and how the collection had managed to survive.<\/p>\n And so begins this extraordinarily moving memoir and detective story as de Waal discovers both the story of the netsuke and of his family, the Ephrussis, over five generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna, the Ephrussis were as rich and respected as the Rothchilds. Yet by the end of the World War II, when the netsuke were hidden from the Nazis in Vienna, this collection of very small carvings was all that remained of their vast empire.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The second book is an ebook from Belle Bridge Books. I literally squealed when I saw it was available. It’s Blood Rock<\/em> by Anthony Francis. I read Frost Moon, the first book in the Skindancer series earlier this year (review pending) and it was a page turner.
