{"id":2428,"date":"2010-05-08T10:23:37","date_gmt":"2010-05-08T14:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=2428"},"modified":"2010-05-08T19:57:13","modified_gmt":"2010-05-08T23:57:13","slug":"ohioana-book-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=2428","title":{"rendered":"Ohioana Book Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_0467.jpg\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2430\" title=\"Ohioana Book Festival\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_0467-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ohioana Book Festival\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_0467-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_0467-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until May 2008, the weekend of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ohioanabookfestival.org\/\">Ohioana Book Festival<\/a>, that I first heard of it.\u00c2\u00a0 Friday was the opening night for Jeff Smith&#8217;s exhibit at the Wexner Center for the Arts.\u00c2\u00a0 Both\u00c2\u00a0Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner were in attendance.\u00c2\u00a0 The next morning they were off to the Ohioana Book Festival.\u00c2\u00a0 The Jeff Smith festivities kept me busy all weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 Last year I didn&#8217;t attend because I knew it would be a madhouse.\u00c2\u00a0 How else would some of these kids get Jeff Smith&#8217;s autograph?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I finally made it this year.\u00c2\u00a0 First I looked at the list of authors and made a preliminary list of the books and authors I wanted to meet.\u00c2\u00a0 After a while I stopped really reading the information and began to skim it.\u00c2\u00a0 My list was getting quite long.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The State Library of Ohio is about nine minutes from my house.\u00c2\u00a0 First I stopped off at Barnes and Noble to pick up the books I wanted but I could not find a single one.\u00c2\u00a0 I asked on Twitter and was told there would be a Barnes and Noble shop on site.<\/p>\n<p>The lobby area was turned into a cafe of sorts with food for attendees.\u00c2\u00a0 Beyond the circulation desk were tables and chairs in front of a podium for readings.\u00c2\u00a0 Beyond the library stacks was the main festival area.\u00c2\u00a0 It was an extremely large room.\u00c2\u00a0 Tables were setup for the sponsors and partners around the perimeter.\u00c2\u00a0 Barnes and Noble had several\u00c2\u00a0 long tables with books and a cash wrap area.\u00c2\u00a0 They were even able to honor my member card for a discount on my purchases.\u00c2\u00a0 One corner had a podium and chairs.\u00c2\u00a0 I imagine this was for the panel discussions.<\/p>\n<p>In the middle of the room were tables groaning under the weight of books with authors behind them.\u00c2\u00a0 I know readers like pictures but I didn&#8217;t take any.\u00c2\u00a0 Because it was lunch time, a lot of authors were eating at their tables &#8211; I didn&#8217;t want to have them worried about food in their teeth and I thought it might be inconsiderate of the other authors who didn&#8217;t get their pictures taken.\u00c2\u00a0 Call me an odd bird.<\/p>\n<p>First I stopped to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sff.net\/people\/lucy-snyder\/\">Lucy A. Snyder<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I was of course, my babbling idiot self, when I introduced myself.\u00c2\u00a0 (I&#8217;m fine with award winning filmmakers but authors in person are another story.)\u00c2\u00a0 Several years ago I went to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garybraunbeck.com\/\">her husband<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0at a reading and when she was chatting with people I used that as my excuse not to introduce myself.\u00c2\u00a0 She and I have been friends on LiveJournal for years.\u00c2\u00a0 I bought a copy of <em>Spellbent<\/em> (one of my favorite books this year) and a limited edition of <em>Sparks and Shadows<\/em>, one of her short story collections.\u00c2\u00a0 We talked a little bit about <em>Spellbent<\/em> and I completely overlooked the Stoker Award on her table.\u00c2\u00a0 (Bad me.)\u00c2\u00a0 Lucy was one of the featured authors at this year&#8217;s festival.<\/p>\n<p>Next I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfsbaneandabsinthe.com\">Linda Robertson<\/a>, the rocking and rolling author of the Persephone Alcmedi series.\u00c2\u00a0 I picked up a copy of <em>Vicious Circle<\/em>, the first in the series.\u00c2\u00a0 She shared a story about the time she had a book signed by an author and the author misspelled her name.\u00c2\u00a0 Linda had two sets of soaps at her table and I took one of the cedar and sage soaps.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s supposed to be what the main character smells when she puts on the leather jacket of Johnny, a werewolf.<\/p>\n<p>Seated at the same table as Linda was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salamanderstales.com\/\">Laura Bickle<\/a>, the author of <em>Embers<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 When I was telling Linda and Laura about all the Ohioana authors I hadn&#8217;t heard of, Laura joked she was a noob.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Embers<\/em> was released last month and in June she&#8217;s releasing another book titled <em>Dark Oracle <\/em>under the name Alayna Williams.\u00c2\u00a0 Want to hear something funny?\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/cheekyreads.blogspot.com\/2010\/04\/welcome-guest-author-laura-bickle.html\">Laura&#8217;s been doing blog tours<\/a> and I left a comment on one of last month&#8217;s stops.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly I was able to meet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caseydaniels.com\/\">Casey Daniels<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I picked up a copy of <em>Don of the Dead<\/em>, the first in the Pepper Martin Mysteries.\u00c2\u00a0 Pepper is a cemetery tour guide who solves ghosts problems.\u00c2\u00a0 There are six books so far with a seventh on the way.\u00c2\u00a0 Casey let me know each ghost is from a different decade.\u00c2\u00a0 This mystery series sounds like a unique concept and the ghosts from different decades are bound to keep things fresh.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up books from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/profiles\/jen.hirt.jenszi\">Jen Hirt<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidgiffels.com\/\">David Giffel<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0but they were away from their table doing readings and I imagine getting some lunch.\u00c2\u00a0 Jen Hirt&#8217;s book is fairly new.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a memoir about her family&#8217;s greenhouse business.\u00c2\u00a0 I heard of David&#8217;s book from The Thurber House author series but didn&#8217;t get a chance to go to the reading.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s about restoring an old house that needs a large amount of work.\u00c2\u00a0 Think of the house the Bouvier Beale women (of <em>Grey Gardens<\/em> fame) lived in and you have an idea of what he was up against.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forwarding to reading all of these books and going to the Ohioana Book Festival in 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until May 2008, the weekend of the Ohioana Book Festival, that I first heard of it.\u00c2\u00a0 Friday was the opening night for Jeff Smith&#8217;s exhibit at the Wexner Center for the Arts.\u00c2\u00a0 Both\u00c2\u00a0Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner were in attendance.\u00c2\u00a0 The next morning they were off to the Ohioana Book Festival.\u00c2\u00a0 The&hellip;
