{"id":1955,"date":"2009-09-19T00:44:56","date_gmt":"2009-09-19T04:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2009-09-23T11:42:56","modified_gmt":"2009-09-23T15:42:56","slug":"bbaw-small-publisher-book-giveaways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1955","title":{"rendered":"BBAW: Small Publisher Book Giveaways!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/BBAW_Celebrate_Books_09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1920\" title=\"BBAW_Celebrate_Books_09\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/BBAW_Celebrate_Books_09.jpg\" alt=\"BBAW_Celebrate_Books_09\" width=\"295\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I made a\u00c2\u00a0pledge earlier that for BBAW I would have book giveaways from small book publishers.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the post for it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coffeehousepress.org\">Coffee House Press<\/a> &#8211; where good books are brewing &#8211; was founded in 1984.\u00c2\u00a0 They publish only a few titles a year.\u00c2\u00a0 The staff size is small.\u00c2\u00a0 Coffee House Press is a nonprofit publisher and will welcome donations.<\/p>\n<p>The book I&#8217;ve chosen from them is one on my TBR pile by a Minneapolis author, Norah Labiner.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>German for Travelers<\/em> should be an interesting read.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/germanfortravelersb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1956   aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"German for Travelers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/germanfortravelersb.jpg\" alt=\"German for Travelers\" width=\"110\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the back of the book:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: left;\"><p>In Search of the key to unlock a great family mystery, Lemon Leopold, a Hollywood starlet, and her cousin Eliza, a romance writer, set off for Berlin.\u00c2\u00a0 Soon they are on a trail that leads back to their great-grandfather, Jozef Apfel, a Jewish pioneer of psychoanalysis in early twentieth-century Germany.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Alternating between the great doctor&#8217;s household, the mysterious case of his patient Eliza Z., the rise of Nazi Germany, mid-century Detroit, and modern-day Berlin, this is a story about a girl whose dreams reveal the future, a family beset by ghosts, and the place that haunts them all.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/\">McSweeney&#8217;s<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was founded in 1998 as a literary journal by David Eggers.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s expanded into a few different divisions.\u00c2\u00a0 The book division has a book of the month club.\u00c2\u00a0 Several times a year they have some wonderful sales.\u00c2\u00a0 Dave Eggers is one of my favorite authors and I&#8217;m giving away a copy of his book, <em>Zeitoun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1960   aligncenter\" title=\"Zeitoun\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Zeitoun.jpg\" alt=\"Zeitoun\" width=\"134\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Zeitoun.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Zeitoun-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the McSweeney&#8217;s description of <em>Zeitoun<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: left;\"><p>When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a prosperous Syrian-American and father of four, chose to stay through the storm to protect his house and contracting business. In the days after, he traveled the flooded streets in a secondhand canoe, passing on supplies and helping those he could. But, on September 6, 2005, Zeitoun abruptly disappeared. Eggers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s riveting nonfiction book, three years in the making, explores Zeitoun\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roots in Syria, his marriage to Kathy\u00e2\u20ac\u201dan American who converted to Islam\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand their children, and the surreal atmosphere (in New Orleans and the United States generally) in which what happened to Abdulrahman Zeitoun became possible.
