As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy&#8217;s closest friends for what will be revealed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Castaways_1681X2544.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1820\" title=\"The Castaways\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Castaways_1681X2544.jpg\" alt=\"The Castaways\" width=\"131\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Castaways_1681X2544.jpg 1681w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Castaways_1681X2544-194x300.jpg 194w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Castaways_1681X2544-663x1024.jpg 663w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a small way, the couples on this island remind me of a high school clique that end up dating all of the other people in the clique resulting in a shared history.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s only because their relationships are so intertwined and not because of immature behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be fooled by the cover like I was, into thinking this would be a light summer read.\u00c2\u00a0 The title refers to the nickname the group give themselves before embarking on their first group trip.\u00c2\u00a0 There are no chapters and most of the book contains the thoughts and stories of the best friends.\u00c2\u00a0 The thoughts after the MacAvoy&#8217;s deaths aren&#8217;t always pleasant and there is the requisite could-haves, should-haves and would-haves.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a bit of a mystery about the boat accident and that keeps popping up.\u00c2\u00a0 I always like to say that no one really knows what goes on in a marriage except for the people involved and Hilderbrand&#8217;s novel is confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Hilderbrand is a student of people.\u00c2\u00a0 As a resident of Nantucket herself, she understands the nuanced differences\u00c2\u00a0between residents and tourists.\u00c2\u00a0 The observations\u00c2\u00a0made by the characters are interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 They are self-aware of how they seem to the other Castaways.\u00c2\u00a0 Ed Kapenash, the Police Chief, even categorizes himself and\u00c2\u00a0a few of The Castaways\u00c2\u00a0into two groups &#8211; cops and robbers.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s safe to say Hilderbrand spent a lot of time with the characters to get to know their backstories.\u00c2\u00a0 There are parallels between the characters in the book (for example, Phoebe Wheeler is a twin and the MacAvoys have twin children) that can account for their closeness as friends.\u00c2\u00a0 Without giving too much away, the character of Phoebe Wheeler had the most dramatic journey but stayed true to herself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1836 alignright\" title=\"Elin Hilderbrand\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Elin-Hilderbrand_215x340.jpg\" alt=\"Elin Hilderbrand\" width=\"215\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Elin-Hilderbrand_215x340.jpg 215w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Elin-Hilderbrand_215x340-189x300.jpg 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Elin Hilderbrand<\/strong><br \/>\nElin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her five previous novels.
