{"id":1776,"date":"2009-07-27T01:02:33","date_gmt":"2009-07-27T05:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1776"},"modified":"2009-07-27T01:02:33","modified_gmt":"2009-07-27T05:02:33","slug":"ravens-by-george-dawes-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1776","title":{"rendered":"Ravens by George Dawes Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ravens are thought to be scavengers but really they are intelligent creatures who can get animals to do the hard work for them.\u00c2\u00a0 Such is the case with the raven characters in George Dawes Green&#8217;s book by the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw McBride and Romeo Zderko are traveling to Florida for a vacation from their tech support jobs in Piqua, Ohio.\u00c2\u00a0 While stopped in Georgia, Shaw overhears the convenience store clerk talk about the identity of the unannounced winner of the\u00c2\u00a0318\u00c2\u00a0million dollar jackpot.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shaw\u00c2\u00a0gets the idea to hold the Boatwright family hostage in exchange for half of the prize money.\u00c2\u00a0 He uses Romeo as a threat to keep them under his control.\u00c2\u00a0 Romeo is armed with a map showing the addresses of their friends and relatives.\u00c2\u00a0 As the person in Shaw&#8217;s life who has always stood by him, Romeo goes along with the role he&#8217;s been assigned in this tale.\u00c2\u00a0 Romeo and Shaw may be friends but they are made of different stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 Romeo has compassion.\u00c2\u00a0 Shaw is interested only in what will get him ahead.\u00c2\u00a0 The reader can see the differences between them from their actions.<\/p>\n<p>At the news conference to announce the lottery winners, Shaw announces he&#8217;s going to give away all of the money.\u00c2\u00a0 Lured by his image and his story, people come from miles around to be near Shaw.\u00c2\u00a0 They want to meet the man who turned his life around and pledged to do good for others.\u00c2\u00a0 Except for the convenience store clerk, no one has a clue that Shaw didn&#8217;t spend any money towards the winning lottery ticket.<\/p>\n<p>The Boatwright family (Mitch &#8211; father; Patsy &#8211; mother; Tara &#8211; teenage daughter; and Jase &#8211; pre-teen son) deal with the situation in varying ways and go through a gamut of emotions.\u00c2\u00a0 Tara is Shaw&#8217;s way into family and tries to keep the others level.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Ravens<\/em> hooks the reader and\u00c2\u00a0refuses to\u00c2\u00a0let go until the unexpected ending.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s true to all of the characters and was satisfying on many levels.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Ravens_154X233.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1808      aligncenter\" style=\"border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"Ravens\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Ravens_154X233.jpg\" alt=\"Ravens\" width=\"154\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ravens are thought to be scavengers but really they are intelligent creatures who can get animals to do the hard work for them.\u00c2\u00a0 Such is the case with the raven characters in George Dawes Green&#8217;s book by the same name.
