{"id":1647,"date":"2009-10-20T17:21:48","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T21:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2009-10-20T17:21:48","modified_gmt":"2009-10-20T21:21:48","slug":"writing-with-the-senses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1647","title":{"rendered":"Writing with the Senses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The five senses can help us perceive the world around us.\u00c2\u00a0 Take away one of them and you&#8217;re\u00c2\u00a0bound to have an incomplete picture.\u00c2\u00a0 Touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight can provide a richer picture\u00c2\u00a0when describing settings and characters.\u00c2\u00a0 Any writer trying to set the reader into the material will make use of the senses.<\/p>\n<p>For example, clothing can indicate\u00c2\u00a0a character&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0economic status.\u00c2\u00a0 Faded clothing in particular can\u00c2\u00a0let the reader know the person spends a lot of time in the sun.\u00c2\u00a0 Or combined the faded clothing with frayed cuffs, the person is unable to purchase a closet full of clothes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve begun reading <em>A Field Guide To Burying Your Parents<\/em> by Liza Palmer and it&#8217;s full of examples that use the senses.\u00c2\u00a0 The main character&#8217;s mother smells like Earl Grey and outside.\u00c2\u00a0 Bits of tea leaves float on top like fish food.\u00c2\u00a0 These little details make the characters and the settings come alive; it&#8217;s not flat writing.<\/p>\n<p>Have you read or written anything lately that really stood out because the senses were involved?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The five senses can help us perceive the world around us.\u00c2\u00a0 Take away one of them and you&#8217;re\u00c2\u00a0bound to have an incomplete picture.\u00c2\u00a0 Touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight can provide a richer picture\u00c2\u00a0when describing settings and characters.\u00c2\u00a0 Any writer trying to set the reader into the material will make use of the senses.
