{"id":1389,"date":"2009-04-27T11:18:15","date_gmt":"2009-04-27T15:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2009-04-27T11:20:41","modified_gmt":"2009-04-27T15:20:41","slug":"follow-me-by-joanna-scott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=1389","title":{"rendered":"Follow Me by Joanna Scott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/followme_1681x2544.jpg\"><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1391  aligncenter\" title=\"followme_1681x2544\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/followme_1681x2544-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"followme_1681x2544\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/followme_1681x2544-193x300.jpg 193w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/followme_1681x2544-660x1024.jpg 660w, http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/followme_1681x2544.jpg 1681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cover to <em>Follow Me<\/em> is intriguing.\u00c2\u00a0 Is the female running to or from something?\u00c2\u00a0 The first paragraph of the book jacket doesn&#8217;t answer the question but it pulled me into the story.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On a summer day in 1946, Sally Werner, the precocious daughter of hardscrabble Pennsylvania farmers, accepts her cousin Daniel&#8217;s invitation to ride his new motorcycle.\u00c2\u00a0 Like so much of what follows in Sally&#8217;s life, it&#8217;s a decision driven by impulse and a thirst for adventure, a decision\u00c2\u00a0with dramatic and far-reaching consequences.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The story of Sally Werner and her various incarnations is told by her granddaughter and namesake.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the story is told in Sally&#8217;s words and follows Sally from the age of 16 until her death.<\/p>\n<p>One of the great pleasures of reading is discovering a new voice.\u00c2\u00a0 Joanna Scott&#8217;s work is new to me but she&#8217;s certainly not a beginning writer.\u00c2\u00a0 While most of Sally&#8217;s story is told in a straight forward manner, Scott is not afraid to mix things up a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;ll combine narrative, internal thoughts,\u00c2\u00a0comprehension of the situation\u00c2\u00a0and snatches of conversation for some passages.\u00c2\u00a0 In less skillful hands those passages could be a mess.\u00c2\u00a0 Scott knows when to hold back.<\/p>\n<p>Some books are easy reads that don&#8217;t require much attention and can be finished in an afternoon.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0When I read a book I often compare it to a loaf of bread or a meal trying to think of how to describe it.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em>Follow Me<\/em> is like a long lunch with many flavors incorporated into the dishes.\u00c2\u00a0 It requires thoughtful attention and it&#8217;s so delicious you can&#8217;t help but get through it quickly.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of Scott&#8217;s descriptions made me laugh because they\u00c2\u00a0are so unique.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, &#8220;Uncle Mason&#8217;s whittling knife made a sound that reminded her of her younger brothers when they slurped soup.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Me<\/em> is currently in the top 5 books I&#8217;ve read this year.\u00c2\u00a0 It was an absolute pleasure (except for the sorrowful passages) from beginning to end.\u00c2\u00a0 Thank you, Miriam, of the Hachette Book Group for introducing me to Joanna Scott.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c2\u00a0 The cover to Follow Me is intriguing.\u00c2\u00a0 Is the female running to or from something?\u00c2\u00a0 The first paragraph of the book jacket doesn&#8217;t answer the question but it pulled me into the story.
