{"id":12,"date":"2008-02-17T15:02:47","date_gmt":"2008-02-17T23:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=12"},"modified":"2008-07-28T18:26:26","modified_gmt":"2008-07-28T22:26:26","slug":"james-mcbride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.amberstults.com\/?p=12","title":{"rendered":"James McBride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I must admit the days have really passed me by.\u00c2\u00a0 I try to update the site each Monday and before I knew it, Monday\u00c2\u00a0had come and gone.<\/p>\n<p>Spike Lee was the recipient of the Wexner Prize for 2008 and came into town last Monday to receive the prize and participate in some events surrounding the honor.\u00c2\u00a0 On Tuesday evening he sat down with his friend, James McBride, for a conversation in Mershon\u00c2\u00a0Auditorium which I was able to attend.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0McBride is in the middle of a book tour to promote\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Song-Yet-Sung-James-McBride\/dp\/1594489726\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1203051595&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Song Yet Sung<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0which he described as about a slave who dreams of the future &#8211; of chariots with rubber tires, and inspires a revolt.\u00c2\u00a0 It certainly got my attention.<\/p>\n<p>It was interesting to hear McBride speak about working with Lee on a screenplay.\u00c2\u00a0 He received a call from Lee while on the road and McBride thought a friend was playing a joke on him.\u00c2\u00a0 Lee wanted to make a movie from McBride&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Miracle-St-Anna-James-McBride\/dp\/B0000AHRAW\/ref=pd_sim_b_img_3\" target=\"_blank\">Miracle at St. Anna<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0which was on its way to being out of print.\u00c2\u00a0 This is McBride&#8217;s first screenplay.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;d write ten pages, give them to Lee, Lee would make comments and hand them back to McBride.\u00c2\u00a0 McBride worked on the changes and handed those pages back with ten more new ones.\u00c2\u00a0 It sounded like there was some give and take.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re the same age and grew up only a few blocks away from each other in New York which automatically creates a rapport.\u00c2\u00a0 The movie is planned to be released in October or November 2008.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it will be a good one based on the trailer I saw.\u00c2\u00a0 It has an international cast and subtitles.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The book is about the 92nd Infantry Division stationed in Italy during World War II.\u00c2\u00a0 Two of the soldiers presently live in Cleveland.\u00c2\u00a0 Several times during the evening they were given standing ovations.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harrison_Dillard\" target=\"_blank\">Harrison Dillard<\/a> is a four-time Olympic gold medalist.\u00c2\u00a0 William Perry is most recently noted for raising $30,000 by himself towards the building of a Colonel Charles Young statue.\u00c2\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t read the book so I don&#8217;t know if the characters are real people or based on real people.\u00c2\u00a0 For the movie, four characters are given most of the screen time and they are based on combinations of real people with the imaginations of McBride and Lee thrown into the mix.<\/p>\n<p>All four men went to the reception held afterwards.\u00c2\u00a0 Several people bought copies of the book while walking through the Wexner Center Bookstore and had them autographed by as many of the four as possible.\u00c2\u00a0 I initially went to hear Spike Lee but I found a new (to me) author and have added more books in my &#8220;to be read&#8221; pile.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I must admit the days have really passed me by.\u00c2\u00a0 I try to update the site each Monday and before I knew it, Monday\u00c2\u00a0had come and gone.
