I read this story in June but lately the memory of it keeps returning.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s likely due to a combination of\u00c2\u00a0the creepiness of the story, Marge Simon’s artwork,\u00c2\u00a0and Guy Maddin.\u00c2\u00a0 What does Guy Maddin have to do with it?\u00c2\u00a0 The last decade or so when\u00c2\u00a0I see images of Canadian hockey players\u00c2\u00a0I think of Maddin’s movies… and I’m going to see one of his movies\u00c2\u00a0this month.\u00c2\u00a0 I don’t think Kirchmeier even indicates the hockey players or the team in his story are Canadian; it’s just this reader’s\u00c2\u00a0interpretation.<\/p>\n
The magical device or object that keeps someone in\u00c2\u00a0at their prime is not a new literary device.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0However, I don’t recall an object quite like the one\u00c2\u00a0featured in Kurt Kirchmeier’s story.\u00c2\u00a0 The object usually has an unpleasant or unforeseen consequence and “Edges” has both.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Kirchmeier doesn’t waste words describing the\u00c2\u00a0history of how the object\u00c2\u00a0came\u00c2\u00a0to be used or how long it had been in use.\u00c2\u00a0 The reader’s imagination determines how long the edge has been used by the team.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
Marge Simon’s drawn interpretation of the object is simple yet effective.\u00c2\u00a0 The mind’s eye fills in the details of the wings.<\/p>\n
