I completely understand your concern with writers (and others) embellishing the truth. While it is generally accepted that movie makers lie, cheat and exxagerate, it seems that we forget how each of us has our own truth. I recently shared some writing with my family about a matriarch in my family and while everyone agreed that I didn't get the woman quite right (they all knew her better than I), they urged me to keep writing.
Who's to say whose truth is the real one? Even your cousin has several versions of her own truth.
The fact is that truth changes depending on the POV, the length of time since the incident and the emotions involved. On top of that, people fill in the blanks for what they don't know or don't remember.
So, how does one decide what is the "real" truth? And if one can't decide, should they stop writing?
I need to know as I must decide whether to continue to tell my family's story knowing that much may be myths, lies and cover-ups.

Great guest post from the author. I think this genre is playing with fire when it takes too many liberties. However, I think most readers of the genre are smart enough to realize when things are reconstructed or embellished and when they are not.
